Be The Critic

In today’s society the two most important things are time and money, and people aim to make the most of their time and money. Some people don’t even have the time to check for themselves if a certain item is worth their money and others don’t have the luxury of spending to try these certain items. In this field you consult you friends or experts. In the entertainment industry this is where critics come in. People just go online and search for a movie they want to see and check if it is worth watching. Because of this the people in the entertainment industry feel that critics comments are everything, they can dictate how many people listen and watch what you have produced, they can dictate the popularity, but most importantly their comments can dictate how much money you make.
For example, if you want to see a movie and a movie critic says it isn’t worth watching or it gets bad reviews chances are you won’t watch it. This lessens the lifespan of the movie in the cinema. Furthermore, you don’t just make money from the number of downloads of a song or number of people who watch your film in the cinema, you make money off of DVD’s and CD’s. So critics also affect the long term income. Also, in terms of distribution and popularity, chances are if critics say a movie or a song is bad then it will be distributed to less parts of the world and all the more it will not be known.

After reading everything above, the question is what if the critics are wrong? Recently I watched a movie called “Unstoppable” featuring Denzel Washington and Chris pine.
Movie critics said this movie was bad and slow paced, but I found it excellent and almost every week the movie was shown it had a packed cinema. More recently Harry Potter got bad reviews and some said there was too much hype around it, but a lot of people genuinely liked it and it continued to gain viewers beyond its first week debut. Now on to the music industry, at the beginning critics were saying Kanye West’s return album entitled “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”
would flop but currently it is sitting on the number one spot. So now there is another pressing question, are critiques just personal opinions? And if so why do so many people rely on them? Lately on the internet there are more and more disagreements with critics whether it is about movies, music or other things. The people in the entertainment industry feel that critics’ comments are possibly the biggest factor in determining as to how much they earn but the truth is the viewers and listeners are the biggest factor. We give the critics power by listening to them and following what they say and I think we don’t take this into enough account. Of course today it is difficult to be able to watch every movie you want to see due to limited time and money but because of this we also end up controlling how much the people in the entertainment industry make based on other people’s opinions.

I think we shouldn’t be relying too much on these critics and we should be able to critique movies and songs on our own, because what is happening is we are basically following someone else’s judgement and believing them. Sure we can follow the judgement of people we trust, but I think we should take this more seriously because this is how a lot of people try to make a living. At the end of the day watching movies and listening to songs are subjective and it is the same with judging people, some people may not like someone but it doesn’t mean you wont like that person. You be the judge.
